Three Lies Keeping You in Survival Mode

2 June 20262 min readBy Gerty Nyirenda

For years I thought I was stuck because I was not working hard enough. I prayed, I planned, I pushed. And I still felt like I was surviving instead of living. It took me a long time to see the real problem. It was not my effort. It was the quiet lies I had agreed with about myself.

Here are three of them. See if any sound familiar.

Lie 1: "When things settle down, then I will feel peace."

Peace is not on the other side of your circumstances. If it were, I would have found it years ago. Peace is a decision you make in the middle of the mess, not a reward you receive once the mess is gone. I had to learn to steady my mind first, and let my situation catch up second.

Lie 2: "Wanting more means I am ungrateful."

I used to shrink my dreams to look humble. But there is nothing holy about hiding what God put in you. You can be deeply grateful for where you are and still believe you were made for more. Gratitude and ambition are not enemies. They walk together.

Lie 3: "This is just who I am."

The most expensive lie of all. Your habits are not your identity. Your fear is not your identity. The version of you that has been getting by is not the ceiling. When you begin to renew your thinking, you discover the version of you that was there all along.

Where to start

Pick the lie that stung the most as you read. That is usually the one running the show. Write down the truth that replaces it, and say it out loud tomorrow morning before the noise begins. That is the whole practice. Small, honest, repeated.

You were not put on this Earth just to work, pay bills, and get by. Let us start proving it, one renewed thought at a time.
